A central European
country, bounded by Czech Lands on the north, Romania on
the east, Croatia and Serbia on the south, Austria on the
west; it is also conterminous with Ukraine in the north-east. From north to south through the centre flows the Danube, in a broad plain (the puszeta) which extends eastwards to the river Tisza across pastureland and areas suited to agriculture. West of the river is the Bakony Forest of mainly deciduous trees, Lake Balaton, the largest and shallowest lake in central Europe, and a fertile plateau with granite hills. The Climate, with cold winters and hot summers, is continental. |
